Tuesday Afternoon

Almost. Not quite.

Let's see. Today is JAZ's birthday! It is his present that I won't sing Happy Birthday to him.

My friend mentioned in yesterday's post who has battled for her child's health care and had her credit destroyed by feuding insurance companies is coming over tonight for a wine tasting and a letter writing session. She wants to write President Obama and thank him for his work on getting this reform to this point.

Got the windows open and fresh cool air sweeping through the house, blowing cat hair bunnies out from corners.

Speaking of cats, my new favorite Thor picture:

I need to learn how to scan photographs. Pout. I used to know how with the old photo program thingie.

Got bunny ears. Got peeps. Do I have cooperating kittens? No!

Monday Morning Musings

Jason woke me up before he left for work this morning and told me that I shouldn't read reader comments on any news sites today. I took that to mean the health insurance reform bill had passed.

I know the media calls it health care reform, but essentially where it will do the most good for the average working American is in the insurance reforms.

Here is a tale of two families. One is five years into the battle, one is just beginning. Both are intact, middle class, both parents college educated, working good jobs, neither living above their incomes. Each had a baby born with serious health problems.

The first family maxed out the cap on their baby's insurance fairly quickly (organ transplants on one year old babies will do that), they then, like responsible parents, added the baby to the other parent's insurance policy. But that insurance company had a six month waiting period. Okay, so the child's health problems were so significant that the baby qualified for Medicaid. Whew! That could cover the lapse. But Medicaid insisted that the private insurance company was the primary and the private insurance insisted that Medicaid was the primary. In the ensuing battle of the insurance companies, the child was denied essential services because the bills were going unpaid. The family had on several occasions to decide between paying the mortgage or buying the child's anti-rejection medications. After a certain time (3 months I believe) the bills became the sole responsibility of the parents, neither insurance was responsible for even a portion of the bills. This family now has over $500,000 in debt from the period where the two insurance companies played "you pay, no you pay". So the parents were reported to credit agencies, bill collectors began calling literally every hour from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Their credit is ruined. Only because this was the only "bad" thing to happen to them (i.e. no layoffs, no one else got sick, no car broke down) they are hanging on to their home.

This is what millions of working families have endured under the current for-profit insurance companies making decisions system.

We shall see how the tale of the second baby pans out. That family is also an intact, college educated, both parents working good jobs, not living above their means family. The baby is covered under one parent's policy. Under the reforms passed, either the policy will have no caps or, when they want to switch to the other policy, there will be no six month waiting period. There will be no reports to credit agencies, there will be no bill collectors calling, there will be no lapse in essential treatment for this child.

This what millions of working families will have on their side once the insurance companies are required to provide the services that their policy holders pay for.

Another situation that I have personal experience with.

A person is diagnosed with a chronic illness (diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, hypertension, high cholesterol). Their doctor gives them a little information in their 10 minute appointment, hands them some pamphlets. The person is then left to navigate the vast amount of information that is out there and make the proper decisions and life style changes necessary. Easier for some than others.

There have been many studies on many different chronic illnesses and many different programs but they all have essentially the same result: for every dollar you spend on education on a disease, you save multiple dollars down the road in expenses for complications.

Under the reforms, prevention will have a place at the table. So, a person newly diagnosed with diabetes will have education classes paid for. They get accurate, up-to-date, personalized information about all aspects of their disease over many classes so they can absorb the information and understand how to care for themselves and how to implement the changes they need to make. Result: their diabetes is well controlled, they are healthier in all aspects, need fewer doctor visits, continue to work and pay taxes, pay their bills and keep their insurance. Without teaching, some do okay, some end up with repeated doctor visits, hospital stays, amputations, blindness, kidney failure, loss of ability to work, go on disability, can't take care of themselves, need home care or nursing home care.

It's just cheaper to pay for prevention. Remember that old saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"? Well, I've been saying for years that America (in the health care sense) has wasted its ounce of prevention and it is now time for the pound of cure.

It will cost more initially to get these things up and running. But it will save more in the long run. That is what we need to return to. The long run. We are living in such an instant society. We are so used to things happening overnight, or sooner. We elected Obama on the hope of change. Then two days after he was sworn in, we started grumbling. "Where is our change?"

To paraphrase Amy Grant, it's gonna take a long time to turn this boat around. America is so huge it is going to take a long time to turn around the economy, the health industry, the education system.

Thor sez: I'll bite those bill collectors like this!
(Lame, I know, but the picture makes me smile)

March Madness

No, not basketball! It is sunny and nearing 70 outside, so I chucked most of my plans, grabbed the camera and headed up 61 to Magnolia. It's a perfect time of year, the winter camellias are still blooming and all the spring blossoms are starting to bloom. Add in some sunning alligators and turtles and what more could you want? Bobcats and foxes? No problem.

^There he is

It's Friday?

Okay, so there went that week. Actually, I got some stuff done. Nothing exciting, but stuff.

I know everybody has their own interests. Some border on obsessions. Mine is genealogy research. I swear it's like crack. I sit down to look up one thing, next thing I know, it's five hours later.

I've had to pull the plug on it.

I did however, look into two family stories. One, that there was native American blood in my maternal great grandfather's family. Result: unknown still, but I think I found the start of the mystery, an ancestor who had one son with one wife, then 7 children popped up, beginning when #1 son was in his mid teens. No trace of a #2 wife that I can find. Not recorded because she was Indian or black or mulatto? (Illegal in those days) Just poor record keeping? I'm going with the Southern Gothic slant and say that the records were burnt by the Great War Criminal Sherman (spit).

The other family story was a link to General Douglas MacArthur via marriage to a cousin of my maternal great grandmother. Now, her mother was a McArthur - different spelling - but I can't find any link unless it is out in the outer fringes of the vast web of brothers and sisters. (Darn those Scots with their ten kids per family!).

Cat craziness. So, Jason had just gotten home and the boyz were waiting for him to come in the house (Loki by the hall just in case it was Zombie Jason).

Loki sez: Zombie humans sneeze when they come in a house, that is a scientific fact!

I wonder if I let the boyz outside if this would happen.

Let's Show Some LOVE!

Wednesday, March 24, the Hate Group will be at West Ashley High School from 0645 am until 0715 am. I plan to be there early - about 0615 with my sign of LOVE.

They will then move to the Jewish Community Center (I am assuming at Wallenburg Blvd as it is West Ashley also) from 0830 to 0900. I will be there also.

Please join me!

The Forces of Evil Are Coming to Charleston

I'm not kidding. Check it out.

These are the people who show up at the funerals of our fallen soldiers and scream that the soldier deserved to die because God hates "fags".

These people are the equivalent to the radical Muslims who blow themselves up, killing hundreds. We Americans complain of Islam, "Where are the moderates? They should be standing up and condemning these acts!"

So, I ask you, Churches of Charleston, where are your moderates standing up to condemn these purveyors of such vile hatred, such perversion of the teachings of Jesus?"

I plan to join as many of the anti-protesters as I can. I am not working most of the week, so will be able to join in. My dream would be a whole mob of Charlestonians, regardless of beliefs, lifestyles, color, income standing in a circle around this cancer trying to poison us, holding signs of our own that simply say "Love".

What sickens me the most about these people is not their blatant hatred, but that most of them are the children of the leaders, their young minds poisoned by this brainwashing since birth. Poor things, I've seen them interviewed at protests, and it makes me both sick and afraid. Young minds so twisted are the ones who turn to murder when words fail to achieve their goals. Ask the radical Muslims, that is how they do it, get them young, poison the minds.

The boyz say: Don't they know what love means?

Serious Saturday

Hey all. I want you to check out this web site. www.willfagan.com.

This amazing young man is the son of one of my coworkers. Will has had a dream to be a neurosurgeon for a long time now and has diligently worked towards that goal with a determination and focus that is extremely rare to see in such a young person.

But not only that, he is a well rounded, well liked young man whose teachers and friends describe him as a "natural leader".

I know times are hard. But if anyone out there can contribute even just a few dollars to help this amazing family, I know they (and I) would be extremely grateful.

How often do you get to help a real person make their dream come true?

MOCK ing BIRD yeah..

Not the most visually stunning video, but this is the lonely heart mockingbird that sings in my backyard night and day. He's sort of in the center, then you can see him move to a higher branch. Sorry about the jiggly picture, but I was holding the camera over head.

Bird Wars

Yes, I am a bird geek. Like you didn't know that.

There is a fierce battle going on in my backyard over the rights to the bluebird house. The sparrows had been roosting in it until the bluebirds showed up. This morning I saw the bluebirds going in and out of the house and figured they'd proven their case.

This afternoon, I was watching because Mr. Bluebird kept peeking into the house, then hopping up on the top and signing his fool little head off. Then he peeked back in and pulled a long strand of dried grass half way out of the entry hole. Mrs. Bluebird showed up shortly afterward and kept peeking in. She pecked at the grass for a while, then went to the top where she and Mr. Bluebird were talking back and forth. I thought it looked like they were arguing over the decorating.

The a sparrow flew up and tried to get in. Mr. Bluebird chased him off, but while that was happening, another sparrow went into the house.

So I guess the saga will continue. I know I'm not supposed to be playing favorites here, but the house sparrows can take a hike. The flock is huge, at least 20 of them hanging around all year long. The bluebirds only come for the spring and summer to raise their babies.

Thor sez: If I was allowed outside, I'd be the bluebird body guard and chase all the sparrows away.

Monday Meddling

I fooled with Mother Nature. I know I shouldn't, but just can't help myself. I carefully opened the blue bird house to see if the sparrows had any eggs. They didn't. There were obvious signs that the nest was the blue bird nest left over from last year. So I cleaned it out. And then hung a wren house in another spot, hoping the sparrows would take it over and leave the blue bird house to the blue birds. I put a pile of pine straw below each house to facilitate nest building.

Well, I'm not sure how that's going to go. Within minutes of hanging the wren house, the Carolina Chickadees showed great interest, one went in, came out, called to his friends and they came over to hop in and out. Then a Carolina wren showed up and told the Chickadees that it was, after all, a wren house. I don't think they have decided on who gets the spot.

Mr. Chickadee sez: I saw it first.

Meanwhile, the Mr. House Sparrow keeps flying up to the blue bird house and looking inside, but he doesn't go in. I am hoping they were just using it as a roosting site and without the nest, it is too deep to interest them. I saw Mr. and Mrs. Bluebird doing some sort of flight dance this morning - they would jump off a branch of the oak tree and twirl around each other to the ground, the fly back up into the tree.

Not like this: (picture only nominally related to post, but I found it while looking for bird pictures and I like it, so there)

I suppose the only answer is more bird houses!

The boyz say: Maybe we can get a real bird out of this!

Housework is EVIL!

Okay, so I'm up bright and early this morning, showered, caffeinated, and dressed, ready to take my mom to physical therapy. Until. (insert dramatic music here) Jason took out the recycling. And I decided that would be a good time to sweep out the pantry where the bins are. And my back went into a massive spasm.

Seriously. I staggered into the living room to lay down on the floor. Jason, superman that he is, sprang into action got me up on the couch with a phone and an ice pack, gave me some ibuprofen and took my mom to her PT.

I managed to stagger around enough to let the floor guy in to do phase one of replacing the floor. And Loki got trapped in the laundry room, so he ran under the couch and was within ten feet of the LOUD air compressor that was firing the finishing nails (or whatever they use) into the flooring. He hasn't come out yet and I can't get down to look at him, so he could have died of fright for all I know.

My wonderful doctor called in a script for a muscle relaxer and Jason drove me up to the store to pick it up. So I'm thinking I've got about one hour of consciousness left.

Moral of the story: Never sweep your floors!

Sorry, no cat picture, I'm on the laptop.

Random Tuesday Stuff

The 10 jillion decibel fans and dehumidifier are gone. Yeah! Huh? The new floor will go down tomorrow.

Having your floor ripped up leads to all sorts of six legged creatures deciding the warm house is better than the cold crawlspace.

Jason gave me the plague. The mucus plague. It's not been pleasant or pretty.

I got my passport! But they did not send my birth certificate back with it. I am hoping it will be sent separately. I don't have a real birth certificate, but a certificate of foreign birth and I don't even want to know what kind of insanity it would be to get that replaced.

Taxes!

I saw a comment to the effect that "I don't mind paying taxes, but I don't get any benefits from them." This person went on to explain how many people his taxes were supporting.

Okay. Here is a shocker: Your taxes go for more than welfare and food stamps.

Do you drive on roads and bridges? Your taxes paid for that.

Do you have police and fire protection? Your taxes paid for that.

Do you have a strong military to protect you? Your taxes paid for that.

Do you take drugs that the FDA approved of? Your taxes paid for that.

Do you drive a car with improved safety features? Your taxes paid for that.

Did your doctor, your accountant, your employer graduate from a public college? Your taxes paid for that.

Enjoyed a visit to a state or national park? Your taxes paid for that.

Welfare and food stamps are a small percentage of the budget.

Taxes are the price of being an American. Remember, freedom is not free! Some pay with their lives, most pay with their taxes.

The boyz say: What do you mean you need a tax deduction for cat hair removal?

Who's Your Kin?

In the South, a well brought up lady or gentleman would be able to answer that to at least four generations back.

Today, we went to Bethany Cemetery in search of some Nimitz kin. We did not locate them, but had an enjoyable sunny afternoon wandering the old cemetery and it's even older neighbor, Magnolia Cemetery.

I was doing some poking around, hoping to find some sort of hint as to where the family plot may be located within the cemetery when I stumbled across a photograph of my great-great-grandfather, Edward Wilson Sanders.

I have a copy of a letter written by my great-great-greatgrandmother to her daughter, who was married to Edward Sanders, just days before my great-grandmother, Anna Sanders, was born.

What a joy to find this photograph.
Last photograph on the page. I believe the second to last would be my great-great uncle.

Friday, February 19, 2010

Ah, the South!

Cat picture to begin because I can't make the laptop work:

Last week it was snowing. Four inches. Today I had the windows open in the car and was too hot in a sweater.

Took my mom for some minor surgery today to remove a cyst from her knee. (and am really quite jealous that she has an easily fixable knee problem) She's doing fine but is going to be in some pain tomorrow. Was playing nurse/physical therapist all day. She is able to do the things she needs to do and my brother is there with her so I'll go back over tomorrow and do some more therapy stuff.

Scene: Surgery center waiting room. Man comes in. Sits down. Gets up and goes to receptionist desk. Asks her if the television playing is a "regular" TV because the Tiger Woods press conference is going to come on soon. Is reassured that the TV is a regular channel. Man sits back down and loudly announces to his companion, "I don't believe in all this celebrity hounding." Man and companion get up and walk closer to TV set to watch once the conference starts and has plenty to say about it.

Scene: Same as above. After press conference, group discussing it. Woman says (of Tiger's wife) "She should have just beat the shit out of him." Considered asking if she would have felt that Tiger should have "beaten the shit" out of his wife if she had been cheating, but refrained. Because as Jason has been telling me for a long time now: "People don't want to think, they just want to say things."

Snowmaggedon!

So, apparently it is supposed to snow later today and overnight. Three to five inches of snow on the ground, up to an inch on the beach.

I am so glad that I don't have to be out in the insanity of Friday rush hour plus mad dash to the stores for bread and milk.

I have bread. I have milk. I have coffee. I have two jars of peanut butter and most importantly, I have four bottles of wine.

I am,however, doing the massive pile of laundry so that if the power goes out, I'll have clean clothes to layer on. (I can't put my arms down!!)

Jason has sworn to toss Thor in the snow.

The In Place To Be

Apparently is my backyard and under the house if you are a couple of studly Casanova Kitties chasing after a comely Kitty Gal.

Yesterday they were chasing each other around the yard, under the shed, through the marsh and into my neighbor's yards.

Then at some point, she broke into the weak link in the under the house protection and we could hear the thumpity-thump-thump as she explored her new hide out.

Until one of the Casanova's found her.

Yowling ensued.

Loki and Thor freak outs ensued. No bloodshed or hissy fits. So far all is calm.

But when I got home this morning, Black and White Casanova (identified by the BIG old unneutered male look about him) rushed up to me and rather rudely demanded that I adopt him. Or give him food. I had to chase him off. Honestly, I had to push him (gently!) through the neighbors fence with my foot. Where he stood and YELLED at me for quite a while.

Thor's Day, The Movie

The after math, boring to anyone but a hard core Thor fan.

Thor's Day!

Well, first, there will be no Thor pictures today. Why? Well because I am writing this on Jason's laptop in the back room, trapped behind locked doors.

Why?

Well, because Thor had some sort of drama this morning. Not sure what, I was unpacking groceries, heard a blood curdling yowl, turned, saw Thor with his tail fluffed to FULL capacity stalking Loki. Loki was hissing and running, so I shut the door to separate them.

Thor spent the next ten minutes at full fluff, sniffing at me like I was the enemy. I don't know what happened, but Loki is freaked and Thor is being an absolute snot. He is snuggly and loving when I am on his side of the door, a Tasmanian screech devil ripping the door down (nearly popping two locks) when ever I go to the other side.

Loki has food, water, a litter box and his most favorite of places, under the bed. But I think this is going to take a day or so to resolve.

Pissant.

Bad Kitten Mommy!

Oh, the Loki guilt I am getting. I can't believe I forgot Loki Sunday! It's been a strange week and is only going to get stranger as we move into next week.

Loki sez: You call that an apology? Where is my fancy Fancy Feast Chicken Florentine with Garden Greens????

As some may know, I came out of the closet recently and admitted to a near crippling bout of serious depression that has been going on for almost a year now, and rapidly got much worse in last few months of the year.

I'd been putting a good face on and pretending and hiding pretty well, but basically through December, I stayed in bed until I "had" to do something or interact with other humans, then put on my happy face for as long as I could.

And I come to have a little insight into all those "out of no-where" suicides that we've all known. A person can fake it for a good long while. It was scary when I started telling people the truth and most had no idea.

Then you add in the guilt factor. I have absolutely nothing to be depressed about. In a country where people are afraid for their jobs, I have had it pretty good. Good, stable job, good income, affordable home that I wasn't stressing about, good physical health, great relationship, healthy, happy family.

I love my FP doc, when I told her the above, she rolled her eyes and said, "Oh, yeah, nothing except that you are perimenopausal and you stopped taking your hormone birth control about six months ago and your brain chemistry is probably completely out of whack."

So I started on a medication and it was amazing, about the second week, I just got out of bed one morning and felt like ME again.

Now I am trying to clean up the mess of having done nothing essentially for the last four months. Getting myself back on track both physically and emotionally and mentally.

Loki sez: I'm sad cos I don't have extra breakfasts or extra cat nip parties.

Friday Frittering

I need to get out and run some errands before the rain starts, but I put my Crosby, Stills and Nash station on Pandora and I never want to get up, except to dance.

I did my taxes yesterday and am now in the throes of my favorite post-taxes occupation: planning my birthday trip.

This year, as it is a BIG birthday year, we are planning a BIG trip: to Amsterdam! I'm very excited as I haven't been out of the country since I was eight when we moved to Japan.

I have been doing a little research since last summer and was very disappointed that a great little find - a B&B that was really studio apartments - is all booked up for the entire month. So back to square one on finding a place to stay.

So, if anyone out there in blogger land knows the city and has any tips, let me know.

Loki sez: I'd like to go to Amsterdam and see the Van Gogh museum.

Thor's Day!

I saw a comment on my Twitter account to the effect of "liberals will never admit their utopia can't be achieved".

Well, okay, here's one. No, utopia cannot be achieved. Because we are all human, subject to human faults.

But that doesn't mean we shouldn't strive to make this world as perfect as we can, does it? Should we just give up on the ideals of fairness and peace and stability for all?

I'm sure people told Martin Luther King, Jr. that the world he envisioned wasn't achievable either, but it didn't stop him, did it?

And who would have even begun to think that an even more adorable Thor photo could be achieved, but here it is:

Thor sez: My utopia was achieved with only a snuggly covered kitten bed!

One Trick Kitty

Thor does one thing consistently: he comes a running when I ask him if he wants to "toothbrushie".

Two notes:
1. That is his personal toothbrush. I'm crazy, not insane.
2. Towards the end, that is Thor slamming his face against the toothbrush, not me smacking him.

Thor has been doing this since he was a kitten. Loki started joining the party about six months ago just to do his weird mouth smacking thing.

Friday Stuff

I went out to dinner last night with a group from work to celebrate one of our tech's graduation from nursing school and, most importantly, her getting a job with us.

When I got home, Jason had three bottle of wine that he'd gotten for me with a gift card he'd received for Christmas. Yep, he's just awesome like that.

I've been captivated and heart broken over the story of author Neil Gaiman's cat, Zoe. A good kitty is hard to find. And harder to say good bye to.

Special Loki Sunday

We have all been watching the coverage from Haiti and are probably feeling pretty helpless. Giving is the best most of us can do to help, but who to give to?

I am personally giving to Charleston Water Missions.

The hospital where I work has partnered with Charleston Water Missions to provide clean water for a hospital in Kenya and has donated $15,000 to the Haiti relief.

This is a local non-profit organization that makes and installs low cost, low maintenance water treatment systems that in the words of Joan Perry, who documented the installation of the Kenyan hospital system "can turn mud into pure, clean water."

This is an awesome charity that provides a service that the people of Haiti can use long term.

Please consider them when deciding where to give. Details for how to give in the link above. Thank you!

Loki sez: For every dollar you donate, I'll do one sit up!

For Real?

I have not left my house since Sunday. Umm. It is cold out there. Like 20 degrees cold. I am a Southerner. I have no heavy winter coat. I have no hat, no scarf, well a decorative scarf. I do have gloves only because driving with a cold steering wheel bothers my hands.

I have ice tea in my veins, not blood.

And poor almost former Yankee (he has a few years left on his 30 year residency requirement to be considered a native) Jason is falling into the local weather people hype that it "might" snow here on Friday.

It will not "snow".

There may be a flake or two of snow spotted within the county lines, but that will be it. There will be no snow ball fights, no sledding, no snow angels, no snow men.

Most importantly, there will be no "tossing Thor" into the snow.

Thor sez: Don't even try it, human.
I think this might be an appropriate time to remind our...ahem...more recent residents of the...

Southern Snow Forecasts
....An Interpretation for Yankees...

Snow Flurries:

At least three snow flakes have been spotted in the county.
Call your place of employment and let them know you will be late/staying home.
Tune in to favorite local news station to watch the near continuous coverage.
Call at least five friends/relatives and discuss whether or not bread and milk should be purchased.

Snow Showers:

More than five snow flakes have been spotted within town limits.
All normal activities shall be cancelled.
Local weathermen will be broadcasting continously, fielding calls from Bubba Joe Shoehorn from Strawberry, SC about the near siege conditions inland.
Your presence is now required BY LAW at the nearest Piggly Wiggly. Wear an extra parka to help protect you during the milk/bread riots.

Blizzard:

Snow is now visible to the naked eye. Some may be collecting on tree leaves and in shadows.
Every form of business/government is now shut down until the crisis has passed.
Local weathermen begin to drop dead from caffeine-induced heart failure. The talking heads will attempt to carry on, somehow, in the face of sure grim icy death to let you, the viewing public, know that the Piggly Wiggly in Ladson still has two half pints of skim milk available. Bread riots are being reported at the Merita outlet in West Ashley.
The governor will be calling out the National Guard if the snow doesn't melt by noon.

The Day After:

You are required by SC State Law to purchase the extra special edition of the Post Courier, which will have the Blizzard of Whatever Year photo insert, showing the frozen pineapple water fountain, 10,000 filthy, pinestraw studded snowmen, and one poor deluded Yankee soul wandering the streets with a sled, in search of a slope.

Still here!

Went directly from a busy week at work to a couple days off for Christmas right back to busy work overlaid with cleaning for company then to having company in town. (Luckily not at the house.)

The man-child came down on leave and brought his girl for me to meet. She is awesome. Had some yummy Jestine's Kitchen and then actually made a real sit down dinner meal for us, them, Jason's daughter, my mom and brother.

Loki was semi-cool with the man-child and the girl but fled the scene when more people showed up.

Thor, however, was VERY BRAVE and came out to meet everyone and even "let" my brother pick him up. (Let=no visible bloodshed.)

As The Decade Turns

When I was 20, I said, "I can't live my life like this." And I made some changes - pretty stupid ones that did not lead to a better life - but I was 20 and heart breakingly naive.

When I was 30, I said, "I can't live my life like this." And I went to college and got a new career.

When I was 40, I said, "I can't live my life like this." And I left my bad marriage, struck out on my own and wrote my first novel.

Today, as I'm looking at turning 50 in the coming year, I have a strong sense that I don't deserve to say "I can't live my life like this" because I have so much.

I have a wonderful man who loves me, I have family, I have friends, I have a good job that provides me with a comfortable living, I am healthy. I am really fortunate with where I am. When I think of the situations others are in, I am ashamed of my selfishness.

So why am I so unhappy? Is it just some habit I've gotten into? Thinking I need to reinvent myself every 10 years? Is it because as I get older, I'm more aware that there isn't much time to recover from any disastrous life changes? Am I afraid? Is it peri-menopause hormonal fluctuations?

I hate telling people I feel depressed because the first question they ask is, "Why?" And I don't have a why, I just do and it makes me feel ashamed and ungrateful.

So I think the brave new life changing event for my 50th year is for me to stop pretending that I'm okay. I've spent the last year acting like myself. Before a social engagement, I have to psych myself up. Before work, I have to put on my nurse personality, force a smile on my face and go pretend for 12 hours at a time.

I've got to find some way to stop pretending to be me and get back to actually being me.

Playing with my Christmas Present

What is this, you say? No kitten video? Well, there was one, but Blogger said something was wrong with it. So I will attempt it again later.
